The Truth About Straws

Turned on the news recently? Logged into your social feeds over the past few weeks? If the answer to either of these questions is YES then we know you’ve likely heard all about both the controversies AND strides we’ve made when it comes to the plastic straw industry! Well today we thought we would share our 2 cents on the whole debacle… because why not?!

The Plastic Straw Industry and its Impact on the Environment

Who knew that such a seemingly small product could impact the environment in such a GREAT way… and I’m not talking about the good kind of “great” either. I’m talking “excessive”… negatively excessive. I’m sure you’ve seen the headlines, and watched the videos of bodies of water FILLED with plastics but in case you haven’t, here’s a bit of a run down on why the plastic straw industry is taking centre stage when it comes to negative impact on the environment:

  • 57 million plastic straws are used by Canadians every day – source
  • It can take up to 200 years for a plastic straw to decompose, and they can’t be recycled in most places, therefore these straws wind up in landfills or our marine ecosystems – source
  • Each year, 1 million seabirds and 100,000 marine animals die from ingesting plastic – source

Those are some scary numbers! Furthermore, plastic straws do not biodegrade, they simply degrade into smaller and smaller pieces, which unfortunately then gets ingested by marine and land animals! ALSO, even if plastic straws are recycled, only a small percentage of that will end up being recycled while the rest lands up in a landfill!

It’s no wonder that major brands and food chains have started making the swap and have pledged to go “plastic straw” free over the next few years! Now although this is fantastic news and it’s wonderful to see big brands make changes for the betterment of our environment. BUT despite all of these really wonderful changes, there IS still an issue!  These new waste-reduction strides have sparked a few concerns from those with reduced mobility and oral-health care needs who actually depend on straws to get their liquids!

But what if I told you that there was an environmentally friendly alternative to the plastic straw industry?
