March Break: Host a Healthy Get Together

March Break is officially, officially HERE! Running out of fun, creative food ideas to feed all the kids during their get togthers?! Well we’ve got a few ideas up our sleeves… read below to see what they are!!

Healthy Kids Snacks

Who says that you can’t play with your food?! It’s arguably the BEST part of cooking… at least I think so, and ESPECIALLY when kids are involved!!! Getting kids involved in the kitchen is a GREAT way to encourage them to learn about healthy foods, what they should be eating, how to get their nutrients and to not shy away from eating the ever so daunting vegetables that kids typically hate so much! My fiancé and I always have his four-year-old niece cook with us and she absolutely LOVES playing sous chef and learning how to make foods!

Not to mention, I seriously can’t think of a better time than March Break to get the kids involved in cooking by making fun, creative and exciting foods that they’ll love to create and eat all at the same time! I mean what else are they going to do with their friends for a whole, solid week?! Have a group over and teach them all how to make some of the below health snacks!

 Enjoy!

Toast Animals

Okay so we KNOW you’ve all seen these toast animals floating around the “interweb” these days, but they are undeniably a massive hit with the kids!!! You can make about a hundred different variations of these little animal toasts so there is absolutely no way the kids can get bored with this particular one!

Give each kid a slice of fibre-rich, Non-GMO Silver Hills Organic Sprouted Breads (on SALE this March) and have each of the kids make their very own toast animals! Have slices of fruit, and March Specials organic goji berries and natural almonds out in bowls so that the kids can pick and choose how they want to create their own toast animal!

Popcorn Balls

Okay so my absolute favourite flavour combinations are of the salty, sweet variety!!! And How FUN are these little guys?!?! Our Surf Sweets organic candies are on SALE this month, and so I HAD to browse their Recipe pages to see if they had any great March-Break appropriate snacks and these couldn’t have been more perfect! You can find the recipe below! Amended from the Wholesome Recipe.

Ingredients

  • 8 cups of popped popcorn
  • 1 cup of organic cane sugar
  • ½ cup agave nectar
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter
  • 4 tsp lemon juice
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • 1 package of Surf Sweet Worms

Directions

  1. Place popcorn in large bowl, and put it to the side
  2. In saucepan combine cane sugar, agave nectar, butter, 1/4 cup water, lemon juice and salt; on medium heat. Bring this to a boil, and be sure to stir to combine.
  3. Allow the mixture to boil until the mixture reaches 245°F on candy thermometer and reaches firm ball stage (around 8-10 minutes). Remove from heat.
  4. Stir in vanilla and baking soda to this mixture. Pour this over popcorn, tossing evenly to coat. Be sure to do this step quickly. Let cool slightly.
  5. Butter your hands, and shape the popcorn into eight 2-inch balls, weaving sour worms into balls. Let cool completely.
